You Don't Own Any of It
Five instructions for a business you were handed, not built. You want the blessing. You skipped the instructions. Then you call the result a mystery.
Five instructions for a business you were handed, not built.
You want the blessing. You skipped the instructions. Then you call the result a mystery.
Every business comes with a blueprint. Most builders only read the part about the roof, because the roof is the part people can see from the street. The foundation is drawn on the same page. It's just further down, and nobody applauds a foundation.
One. Money always asks for more.
If the purpose is money, there is no number that ends the conversation. You hit the target and the target moves. That's not a discipline problem. That's what the instrument does.
Money is a tool. It's a terrible master. A tool you can set down at the end of the day. A master follows you home and sits at the table.
Your business was never meant to become your identity. When the business is you, every slow month is a verdict on your worth, and you'll make defensive decisions to protect a feeling instead of correct decisions to protect the work.
You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:24.
Read it again. Not should not. Cannot. It's a statement about capacity, not about morality. Divided attention is not attention. It's two half-jobs wearing one calendar.
Two. Nothing here belongs to you.
Ownership is a story you tell the bank. Stewardship is the thing that's actually happening.
The money isn't yours. The business isn't yours. The gift isn't yours. The opportunity, the timing, the person who took your call in 2019, none of it is yours. You're managing an inventory you didn't create, and one day you hand back the count.
That reframes bookkeeping entirely. Learning your numbers, giving generously, planning early, refusing waste. That's not administration. That's worship performed with a calculator.
The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. Proverbs 21:5.
Faithfulness comes before increase. The order is not decorative. Roots run for a full season before anything breaks the surface, and most people quit somewhere in the root season because nothing is happening where they can see it.
Three. Reputation outlives revenue.
Marketing gets people through the door. Character is the only thing that keeps them there.
Revenue is a number for this month. Reputation is a number that compounds for thirty years, and unlike revenue, it can't be bought back at any price once it's spent.
Keep your word when it costs you. Tell the truth when the truth loses the sale. That's the entire practice, and it's harder than any growth strategy you'll ever read.
Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds. Matthew 5:16.
Your invoice is a sermon. So is your callback time, your refund policy, and how you talk about the client who didn't pay. The work is the witness.
Four. The better question.
Stop asking how to make more money. Start asking how to serve more people. The second question answers the first. The first question never answers the second.
Service is not a funnel stage. Care is not a conversion tactic. People can tell, always, immediately, and they'll forgive a delay far faster than they forgive being handled.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. In humility value others above yourselves. Philippians 2:3.
If you're too important to serve the customer, you've forgotten who you claim to be following.
Five. Execute with conviction.
Confusion is not a sign of depth. Most of the time it's a sign that you haven't decided.
People stay broke because they never fully commit. They collect assignments instead of finishing one. A new idea every ninety days, a harvest never. The shiny object isn't a distraction from the work, it's a way of avoiding the verdict the work would deliver.
Decide. Pray on it. Get counsel from people who have actually built something, rather than people who have opinions about building. Then move, and stop looking sideways to see whether someone else got a better assignment.
Let your eyes look straight ahead. Do not turn to the right or to the left. Proverbs 4:25 through 27.
Execution is not doing more. It's finishing what you were given.
The blessing was never withheld. The instructions were.
