The work is the credential
Five dropouts, zero degrees, and a body of work that argues for itself. Specific knowledge cannot be taught. If it can be taught, it can be automated, and the work is the only credential that holds.
You went to college to learn other people’s ideas. I dropped out five times because I wanted to use mine. Here’s what I learned building instead of attending.
The American system runs on a model built for factories. Show up. Follow instructions. Get graded on compliance. Receive a piece of paper. Trade it for a salary. Trade that for a mortgage. Trade that for 30 years of showing up. That’s not a career. That’s a feedback loop.
College teaches you to cite sources, not to become one.
Every class I sat in was teaching me what someone else figured out 20 years ago. I kept asking: where’s the class on figuring out the next thing? There isn’t one. That’s the tell.
What nobody could teach me
Industrial electrical technician. $16/hour as a temp. From there I built a 14-agent cognitive system for manufacturing, a blockchain protocol with a novel consensus mechanism, and a psychoacoustic engine mapping emotion from audio waveforms. Nobody taught me any of that. Nobody could have.
Specific knowledge cannot be taught. Naval said that. He’s right. If it can be taught, it can be automated. If it can be automated, you’re replaceable. If you’re replaceable, you’re not building wealth. You’re renting out your time.
The robot is already being built. I know because I’m building it. The people who will build the future are not in classrooms learning about the past. They’re in garages, on night shifts, and in bedrooms at 4 a.m. with a terminal open and an idea that doesn’t have a name yet.
The system cannot credential what it cannot categorize.
Certainty is an illusion
Society conditions people to optimize for certainty. Get the degree. Get the job. Get the 401(k). But certainty is an illusion. Every “safe” path is a bet that the system training you today will still exist when you retire. Ask anyone who graduated in 2008.
I have a pacemaker. I stream my heartbeat to Solana every 60 seconds. Eight autonomous agents witness it. I wanted to answer a question nobody was asking: what if biological identity was a protocol primitive? No course covers that. You either see the question or you don’t.
Naval says the new forms of leverage are code and media. Permissionless. No one has to give you a factory. I have built 74 research instruments: frisson detection systems, civic accountability engines, and VR movement pipelines converted into robotics training datasets. That’s not a résumé. That’s a body of work.
The Industrial Revolution needed obedient workers. It built schools to produce them. Bells. Standardized tests. Permission structures. We kept running that model long after the conditions that built it changed. If external instructions have defined your whole path, ask whether you’re pursuing your own goals or just maintaining the system.
“But you need a degree to get hired.” Hired by whom? To do what? To spend your time executing someone else’s vision in exchange for a fraction of the value you create? Employment is valuable for many people. It is not the only path. Building your own vision is the other path.
I publish when the work is done
I don’t publish in journals. Journals are peer review by committee. Committees optimize for consensus. Consensus is the enemy of discovery. I publish when the work is done. The work either holds up under scrutiny or it doesn’t.
Einstein was a patent clerk before securing an academic position. In 1905, he published papers that transformed physics. Nobody remembers the résumé. They remember the work.
The work is the credential. Everything else is theater.
The argument isn’t that college is useless. Many people benefit from structure, mentorship, and formal education. The mistake is assuming it’s required. A diploma does not prove competence. Attendance does not guarantee mastery.

Naval’s framework comes down to four moves: specific knowledge, accountability, leverage through code and media, and judgment earned through doing. I didn’t read those ideas and decide to follow them. I read them and realized someone had articulated what I had already been trying to do.
You were told to go to school so you could get a good job. You were told to get a good job so you could have security. You were told security meant a salary. Most people repeat these ideas because they inherited them, not because they tested them.
The question is not whether those paths work. The question is whether they are the right paths for you.
